The thesis delves into a comprehensive design process, ranging from initial conceptualization to the final editing of a typographic family. This involves creating characters that are visually consistent and versatile, ensuring readability and applicability in various design scenarios. The undeniable connection between typography and the art world is explored in this thesis. It analyzes how 20th-century art movements such as expressionism, futurism, constructivism, dadaism, and art deco actively explored typographic possibilities in their works. These artistic movements used typography as a means to visually express ideas and emotions, challenging established typographic conventions. Objectives • Integrate typographic design into the realm of fine arts studies. • Discern the historical roots of writing and calligraphy, analyzing historical aspects influencing typography's development and its evolution with technological advancements and social changes. • Understand how technology has intervened in typography's design and perception, and explore the future of this discipline. • Study the influence of 20th-century avant-gardes on subsequent typographic design development. • Analyze the creative process from the origin of typography to the present day. • Develop a typographic project resulting from research, considering its historical context. • Establish guidelines for the development of a typography course within fine arts studies, covering the origin of writing, movable type, digital typography, and its artistic aspects related to calligraphy and lettering. Methodology A narrative bibliographic review was conducted, encompassing a wide range of analog and digital sources, including written and audiovisual elements. This review was crucial for supporting and contextualizing the current study, allowing a thorough examination of existing theories, methodological approaches used by previous researchers, and relevant findings in the research field. Conclusions The research successfully achieved the initially set objectives: integrating typographic design into the fine arts study, analyzing the creative process of typography, and developing a typographic project culminating in the design of the Ausans typographic family. We have met the challenge of delimiting the study field and understanding the origin of writing, its evolution, and the impact of the invention of movable type printing on knowledge creation and dissemination. Typography can play a crucial role in technological and product development, with increasing importance as digital screens require legible and attractive typefaces. Based on these observations, we argue that the inclusion of typography as a cross-disciplinary subject in fine arts and related fields could provide significant educational value. The creation of the Ausans typographic family exemplifies this, as our journey from the origins of writing to the exploration of influential typefaces from different historical periods has enriched the knowledge base necessary for designing this font. However, the completion of the Ausans typographic design does not mark the end of the research but rather opens the door to future improvements and expansions. With the conclusion of this thesis, new opportunities for further exploration present themselves. Some of the sections that were addressed secondarily could be revisited to initiate new investigations.
