Resumen

Nowadays the information and communication technologies (ICT) are extremely useful for research in phraseology and paremiology. The present paper shows that the ICT also play an important role in the documentation process for the translation of phraseological units (PUs) from English into Spanish and vice versa: monolingual dictionaries allow the translator to identify and interpret the PUs whereas bilingual dictionaries allow the translator to look for correspondences between the source and the target language. In this way, this paper proposes some guidelines on the use of six monolingual general dictionaries (English, Spanish) and five bilingual dictionaries (English-Spanish) for the translation of PUs. Nevertheless, this study shows that, much in the same vein as conventional dictionaries, online dictionary do not deal with PUs adequately, and on many occasions translators have to resort to their phraseological competence and to other online resources in order to be able to translate PUs.
