Abstract
Exponentially growing cells oí Candida utilis contain less endogenous trehalose than stationary phase cells. The lower levels of stored trehalose in actively growing cells are due not only to decreased trehalose synthesis but also to increased catabolism of the reserve disaccharide. Glucose appears to be involved in the regulation of the two pathways that determine net trehalose accumulation: this sugar inhibits trehalose synthase activity (EC 2.4.1.15) in vitro and simultaneously activates trehalose hydrolase activity (EC 3.2.1.28)
