This research presents an approach to the situation of education during the first years of the 20th century, in the geographical area of Lorca in the Murcia (Spain). Special attention is given to primary education to offer a reflection of the state of education and the school based on the evidence offered by the archival sources. Likewise, literacy processes, the increase in the number of schools, the situation and conditions of the teaching profession and the performance of the different local institutions in education are addressed. It´s a matter of reconstructing a period of our recent history that, although circumscribed to the subject of education, doesn´t put aside the overall perspective necessary to understand the political, social, economic and cultural context of the country at the beginning of 20th century.
