Resumo

One of the main challenges facing the world of oenology today is obtaining wines with a lower alcohol content, as this has increased in recent years as a result of the effects of climate change. One of the strategies that can be used is obtaining new varieties through directed crossbreeding. At IMIDA for a few years we have been carrying out a line of research, whose objective is to obtain new varieties derived from ‘Monastrell’ that would give rise to wines with low alcohol content (VLAG). Currently we already have five selected crosses with these characteristics that began to produce two years ago. The results obtained so far are very promising, since due to the high amount of phenolic compounds, they can be harvested earlier than the ‘Monastrell’ variety, giving rise to wines with a low alcohol content and therefore adapted to the tastes and requirements of current consumers.
