Resumen
The aim of this work was to study the histological modifications of the gastrointestinal mucosa when exposed to free radicals and to ascertain whether athanol can reduce the damage caused by these free radicals. For this, we studied structural and ultrastructural modifications of the gastrointestinal mucosa of rats treated with Fenton reagent (a free radical producer) with or without added ethanol. At the structural level, the results pointed to more inflamatory lesions in the rats treated with Fenton reagent alone. At the ultrastructural level, on the other hand, no differences were observed between the kind of cellular lesions found in rats treated with Fenton reagent and those found in rats treated with both Fenton reagent and ethanol, sice all the lesions were unspecific and appeared with the same frecuency. Due to the lack of specificity in the histological alterations produced by free radicals, such alterations can only reflect the intensity but not the etiology of the damage produced.
