The relationship between height and economic development in Spain.A historical perspective.

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza la relación entre la talla humana y el desarrollo económico en la España contemporánea. Dicha relación se investiga mediante series de estaturas construidas recientemente con datos del reclutamiento. Observamos cambios en los promedios de talla a lo largo del período analizado. Estas variaciones se pueden explicar por diversos indicadores del desarrollo económico. En este caso, usamos la renta per capita, el deflactor del consumo privado, los gastos en cuidado e higiene personal, la escolarización, la mortalidad infantil y el grado de apertura de la economía. Modelizamos la estatura humana como un Vector Autoregressive Model (VAR) y procedemos a estimar un Vector Autoregressive Equilibrium Correction Model (VECqM) para cuantificar la respuesta de la estatura a diversos cambios en las diversas variables explicativas. El análisis demuestra que hay una relación duradera entre la talla, la renta y otros indicadores del desarrollo económico en España, como el consumo de servicios sanitarios y de productos de la higiene y el grado de apertura.
