Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the determinants of spending in the municipal service of waste collection in Spain. For this we have used a sample of municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (144), which are those contained in a report of transparency of municipalities made in the Rey Juan Carlos University. In our work we group the different factors that can influence the level of expenditure of this municipal service into three categories: political, socioeconomic and management. Among all the factors considered, only the level of transparency of local government affects the cost of service. In particular, greater transparency leads to decreasing costs of the service, which means that politicians at the municipal level may be still very cautious about spending when they give to citizens so much information as possible.
