Abstract

The Valencian window caves are groups of artificial cavities excavated into inaccessible rocky bluffs. Other equivalent names are “magasins or greniers de falaise”, air caves, "coves-finestra", or steep granaries, in other geographical areas where they have also been detected, with a great diversity of types, in our area they are popularly named as “covetes” or “finestres dels moros” (small caves or Moors’ windows), being the most relevant and best-known example of them the group named “Les Covetes dels Moros” in Bocairent. According to the hypothesis of work that we handle, their basic functions would be those of granaries and refuges and would be dated back to medieval Andalusian times.
