Resumo
Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to explore the enhancing and protective factors of ageism among nursing students. Methodology: A scoping review was conducted following the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Protocols and the specifications of Peters et al. 2020. Databases consulted included PubMed, CINAHL, SciELO, Trip Database, and the Cochrane Library systematic reviews bank. The study selection occurred in two stages and was documented using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. The methodological quality of selected studies was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Spanish version, and experts in the field were consulted. Results: Ten articles were analyzed, addressing various dimensions of ageism, moral sensitivity, knowledge about aging, and the influence of contact with older adults on nursing students’ attitudes. Conclusions: Protective factors such as moral sensitivity and early exposure to caring for older adults were identified, promoting more compassionate and respectful attitudes toward aging. Likewise, ageism-enhancing factors were detected, such as cultural differences and the lack of specific educational interventions. Integrating strategies into nursing programs that promote respect and empathy toward older individuals is crucial, as is conducting further research to design effective strategies that promote inclusive and respectful healthcare for all stages of life.
