Abstract

Throughout the Blue Book, Wittgenstein repeatedly uses the figure of the Platonic Socrates as a kind of antagonistic figure against whom he presents his new philosophical views in the 1930s. The aim of this paper is to analyse these views by looking at the role of critical allusions to the Platonic Socrates in their elaboration. I will focus mainly on Wittgenstein’s examination of the form of the Socratic question “What is X?, on his understanding of the relation of the Blue Book with Platonic philosophy, on his critical assessment of the Socratic-Platonic conflict with everyday language, and, finally, on his analysis of the sources of what he calls “our craving for generality”.
