Zusammenfassung

Groundwater is a key natural resource for the environment and economic development of theSegura River basin, satisfying around 35% of the total demand for irrigation. In the Campo deCartagena-Mar Menor basin, groundwater plays a strategic role, especially in drought periods,when it covers 30-75% of the shortfall from the Tagus-Segura Transfer. The interrelationshipof the aquifers in the Campo de Cartagena with the Mar Menor coastal lagoon and the environmental consequences of the intensive use of groundwater are behind the growing scientificinterest in the region, coinciding with the need to comply with the legal requirements of theWFD. The effective adoption of adaptation and mitigation measures aimed at improving watermanagement in the basin requires tools such as Decision Support Systems based on greaterknowledge of the hydro-geological aspects of the multi-layer aquifer system and the dynamicpatterns of water use and consumption.
