Résumé
Why is a pricing system the best way to allocate natural resources? The project sets the stage by describing the competing demands for Colorado River water. The Colorado River supplies water to one in eight Americans for their residential, industrial, mining, agricultural, and recreational needs. The challenge is to reconcile the individual needs of consumers with the health of the river, while a constantly changing set of conditions influences both supply and demand. A role-playing game has been developed in which students must decide how much water to take and calculate the total value of water use to society. They are presented with a series of scenarios that change their incentives to take water from the river. Students discover that when something is priced appropriately, its total value is maximized in a price system.
