Resumo
No other figure better embodies the Spanish 18th century than the petimetre. A male stereotype of a predominantly urban class, he became a character of satire and social criticism. However, Clavijo y Fajardo - among many other enlightened authors - points out that it was the petimetre who first used the word “civilization”. Indeed, the petimetre not only opposed the tradition and the rustic world of the castellans, but also favored the process of disciplinary civilization in the sociability of the second half of the Enlightenment. But was he really such a fatuous and superficial character, and did he really come from the privileged class? These are some of the questions that this study will try to answer through documentation and historical literature in order to verify the contrast and cultural duality generated, as well as whether it was a minority group in the society of the time.
