Resum

The political action of the Hispanic Monarchy was based on perceptions of the world that evolved throughout the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The identification and qualification of the various territories was crucial in defining the possibility and, if so, the means of incorporating them. The needs and traditions of thought available in the Monarchy laid the foundations from which to interpret the priority of allocating resources to one area or another. The concrete action of the King's forces, that were deployed to many regions across the planet, depended on this changing political hierarchy. Three main periods can be distinguished: the first one of syncopated territorial construction, a second one of expansion by reaction and a third period, already in the 17th century, that was characterised by a strong hierarchy of spaces.
