Resumo
Genome editing techniques are already used in medicine, biology and health sciences. Its amazing precision in eliminating a gene, altered or not, to replace it with another at an affordable cost for many laboratories, and the extraordinary possibilities it offers, represent a turning point in biomedicine. By far the most controversial application is its use to modify the human germline genome, which is currently under debate. In this article we will describe the technique and its use today. Later we will analyze the scientific, legal and ethical aspects involved, and we will study the feasibility of the technique to prevent a serious genetic disease, the treatment of rare diseases and genetic improvement.
