Resumo

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the primary cause of death among elderly people in advanced countries. In addition, ischemic heart disease has been a typical pathology of elderly patients. While stent angioplasty is considered an effective and safe procedure for heart patients older than 65 years, information is scanty regarding the long-term clinical follow-up for the elderly patients undergoing stent angioplasty. The objective of this study was to increase knowledge about the long-term evolution of patients older than 65 years, who required angioplasty with Stent, through the development of a cohort study, analytical, observational and prospective. Between June 1991 and June 1997, a total of 1029 consecutive patients was included in the study. The patients were in two groups: those older than 65 years and those younger than 65 years. The incidence of long-term clinical events (4 years) is similar. Although a higher mortality rate (65% higher) is detected in elderly patients. The study enhances a greater understanding of the long-term evolution of patients older than 65 years. Importantly, stent angioplasty achieves satisfactory medium-term results in elderly patients.
