Abstract

The evolution of the consumption of drugs from the therapeutic group N05BA (BZD derivatives) was studied, paying special attention to the consumption of lorazepam, in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM) and in the municipality of Mula, in the period 2012-2018. A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed, where the variables collected were sex, age and the prescribed Defined Daily Dose (DDD). The data correspond to the dispensing of drugs from the therapeutic group N05BA in the pharmacy offices of the entire CARM and the dispensing of the municipality of Mula, provided by the General Directorate of Health Assistance. The Defined Daily Dose per inhabitant and day per 1000 inhabitants (DHD) were calculated and the groups for later comparisons were established using the median and interquartile ranges p50, p75 and p100. Overall consumption during the period studied increased by 18.88% for CARM and 2.36% for the municipality of Mula. Regarding the specific study of the consumption of lorazepam, this increased by 17.23% in the CARM and by 0.42% in the municipality of Mula. The highest consumption, both in the CARM and in Mula, occurs mainly in the group of women compared to the group of men, and in higher doses, finding significant differences in consumption between groups when analyzing by sex. The analysis by age groups showed a significant increase in consumption as the age of the patients increased, both in the CARM and in the municipality of Mula. The consumption of BZD is high as age advances, more urgently in women, and this may affect the adverse effects associated with this group of drugs and presenting an important public health problem.
