Resumen
Introduction: the most common treatments for maxilary lateral incisors agenesis (MLIA) are: space closure or space reopening and implant placement. Objetives: examinate and compare the evaluation pattern of three groups (orthodontists, dentists and laypeople) using “good” and “bad” cases of MLIA treated with both options and to know if “good” and “bad” cases were scored the same way in both types of treatment. Methods: 57 orthodontists, 75 dentists and 85 laypeople completed an esthetic questionnaire in person, no internet was used. A commitee of expert orthodontists was used for selecting the pictures used on the questionnaire. The observers had to rank all the images in a 1 to 10 scale and choose the best and the worst. Descriptive and inference statistical analisys was used. No parametric tests were applied (Kruskall-Wallis, Friedmann and U-test). Results and conclusions: there were statistically significant differences in the evaluation pattern of the three groups for: the scores of “bad” pictures of both treatments between orthodontists and laypeople and between dentists and laypeople. “Bad” pictures ratings of closing and opening spaces were statistically significant higher in the laypeople group. No significant differences within groups were found between the scores of the “good” pictures of both treatments, either between the ratings of “good” and “bad” pictures of both options in the laypeope group.
