Resumen

This paper focuses on the analysis of the proemium of Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe, by reviewing its sources and literary models, and emphasizing the way Longus combines and transforms its models. Firstly, we underline the importance of hypotexts such as Thucydides and Plato, to proceed with the study of Longus’ particular connection with the epic proemia and hymnic tradition. We also compare Longus’ proemium with Oppian and Menander’s rhetorical theory, and conclude with a few remarks on the didactic purpose and the cathartic function of this preface.
