Zusammenfassung

This paper aims for highlighting the relationship between the political importance of the Hispanic Monarchy in its overseas territories and the evangelization. The peculiarities of the Indian Church enhanced the work of the regular clergy, whose influence extended from the realm of religion to all spheres of life in the new american societies. Evangelizing meant primarily creating a catholic collective identity and, with it, the basis for the incorporation of the natives to the domain of the king of Spain. To do this we stress the �spiritual conquest� as a parallel process and strongly linked to the �military conquest�, marked by the violence of an imposed faith, suppressor of pre-Hispanic past. We do it through sixteenth century pictures and testimonials which interpreted the events of change that resulted in Hispanic America.
