Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyse the level of hamstring muscle extensibility in third to sixth-grade children that participate in the ISQUIOS Programme. A total of 741 third to sixth-grade students (384 girls and 357 boys), from 16 schools in the city of Cartagena (Average age: 10.55±1.11 years, height: 142.49±8.66 cm, weight: 40.23±10.57 kg) were assessed. Hamstring extensibility was determined using the straight leg raise test. Students were categorized into three groups depending on their hamstring extensibility (Normal: >75°; Grade I shortening: 74-61°; Grade II shortening: <60°). The average flexion of the right and left hip were 68.71°±8.89° and 69.15°±9.13°, respectively. No significant differences were observed between the scores obtained with the two legs in the straight leg raise test. When measuring the right leg, 30.39% of the students had normal scores, 44.78% presented grade I shortness, and 24.83% had grade II shortness. As for the left leg, 31.35% had normal values, 44.32% had grade I shortness and 24.32 had grade II shortness. The results of the present study demonstrate that a low percentage of the students had a normal level of extensibility, being 30.39% for the right lower limb and 31.35% for the left, with the rest presenting different levels of hamstring muscle shortening. Regarding gender, significant differences were observed, where 43.49% of the girls presented normal values and only 18.26% of the boys. These percentages indicate an increased frequency in hamstring tightness in schoolchildren, requiring specific stretching exercises.
