Abstract

Performance in pole-vault depends on the interaction between the athlete and the pole. The energy accumulated in the pole depends on the speed and strength that the athletes create in the approach run, plant, and take-off. An increase in the speed developed by the athlete in the approach run will affect the jump structure and its efficacy. The purpose of the present study was to establish tests and reference values for the approach run. An intentional sample of 10 athletes (7 males and 3 females) was used. All were pole-vaulters. A quasi-experimental design was used. Independent variables were type of approach run (maximal speed run without and with the pole; approach run without jump without and with the pole; and approach run with jump without and with the pole). Dependent variables were: average and maximum speed, step frequency, and step length. The results show that speed, step frequency, and step length were higher in running situations without the pole and when situations were more specific. Speed was more controlled when pole-vaulters had to plant and take-off. The proposal of tests can help coaches to detect pole transport and plant problems in the approach run of their pole-vaulters.
