The present paper gets deep into Robert Spaemann’s ethics, which is characterized by benevolence, this is, the rational ability to recognize existence beyond oneself. This ethic, enrooted in Christian Western tradition, is compared with the two current predominant schools: consequentialist ethics and systems theory. In both cases, these are theories that arise from a very modern phenomenon: the abandonment of teleology. Habermas’ ethics is also analyzed as a current alternative to consequentialism, and is compared with Spaemann’s, from which we will see its shortcomings. Finally, some applied questions (bioethical, ecological and educative) are treated from the ethic of benevolence.
