Abstract

Thought-provoking preliminary observations indicated interesting psychosocial-dynamic behaviour patterns among bilinguals with a divergent pronunciation of the /s/ in their German (L1) and Spanish (L2). Through data triangulation, one result indicated that these bilinguals may resort to compensatory strategies to avoid an utterance which makes them feel estranged from the German-speaking community. Do more individuals behave in this way? Could such a behaviour indicate a greater feeling of belonging to their alternative language, society and culture? How could a university lecturer intervene under such circumstances to counterbalance a subject’s potential feelings of inequality? In order to approach potential answers to these (and other) questions, potential migration of the language preference (from German into Spanish), of subjects themselves to a non-maternal sociolinguistic environment (from Germany to Spain) and problem solving of such situations in the multilingual classroom (from communicative and intercultural perspectives) have been regarded more closely within the particular case the text poses.
