Abstract

This article presents an experience of psychosocial intervention in which the expression and socialization of a group of people with mental illness was worked on through a workshop on creating and animating puppets. Within the theoretical framework of the article we will focus on developing a catalogue of types and methods for the construction of puppets that facilitate the use of this material as a socio-educational and therapeutic tool. Through analysis of the experiences we will highlight the main qualities of the use of puppets for social and health improvement. Among these potentialities, we highlight the ability of the puppet to formulate questions that have to do with the construction of the body itself, and the possibility of using play mediated in the word space, so that people with mental illness can approach their areas of conflict in a safe way and establish new relationship links, with others and with their environment, in a protected way. The conclusions show that building and playing with puppets facilitated the expression of people with mental illness, and enabled them to symbolically recreate different situations in a controlled way, helping them to incorporate substantial changes in their reality.
