Abstract

At present, the multiple articulation is used by few virtuous clarinetists due to its complexity when performing it and the supposed lack of repertoire where to apply it. Therefore, the objective is to use ICT to demonstrate that it is necessary to learn multiple articulation to interpret the clarinet repertoire. First, a bibliography was searched in Dialnet and Google Scholar to find out the maximum speed of a single tonguing of a musician with a high command of the clarinet using the search string “Clarinet AND multiple articulation AND technology”. Scores were searched in the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) where there were notes chopped at high speed and, in those that did not have numerical indications, 7 quality recordings from YouTube and Spotify were collected to measure the speeds with ZyMi’s “TAP Tempo”. After conducting the review, fragments of 52 works were compiled, of which 24 did not indicate the tempo at which they should be interpreted. Therefore, the speed of a total of 168 videos was measured where it was observed that the speeds were very high, all higher than those indicated in the scientific evidence. Therefore, it can be concluded that multiple articulation is useful and necessary for any instrument such as the clarinet. Furthermore, it has been shown, thanks to the use of ICT, that on many occasions the velocities of all the passages included in the study are too high to be interpreted with simple chopping and that the technique would facilitate their interpretation
