Abstract

The first aim of this work is to establish what topics fall under the label of “sensitive or controversial topics”, that is, which definition comes to terms better with these controversial contents. Secondly, we will analyse some specific cases experienced by the author in his classes, especially in the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, and a series of lessons or morals taken from those cases. Thirdly, we will establish a simple protocol to follow before, during and after a class in order to prevent awkward situations when tackling “sensitive or controversial issues”. Finally, we will study to what extent the inclusion of “sensitive or controversial topics” in a L2 Spanish class not only improves the language skills of learners but also their soft skills, such us empathy, critical thinking, ease of communication, creativity, teamwork and respect for different opinions, among many others.
