Abstract

Objective: To describe the possible influence of the second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) on the emergence of the metabolic syndrome on mental patients according to current scientific literature. Methods: An integrative review of the scientific literature in national and international databases has been done, and the analysis has been completed with inverse reviews. Results: We have obtained information about the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome, the relation about the SGA and the metabolic syndrome, and the role of nursery in the care of these patients. Conclusions: The evidences about the topic are not enough, but we can affirm that the SGA, hightlighting olanzapine and clozapine are responsable of the metabolic syndrome as they produce an increase in weigh and metabolic disorders. Regarding the role of nursery, we can say that a valoration of the patient, a personalized care and a metabolic control are essential requirements.
