Abstract

Introduction: The importance of vascular access in critically ill patients, beside the difficulty of channeling a peripheral venous route, creates the necessity for faster and safer alternatives; the intraosseous route is the most indicated. It allows administer fluids and drugs, and draw bone marrow samples. Objective: To compare the use of BIG and EZ-IO introsseous devices. Methodology: To make this systematic review, it has been made a searching in several databases, using the search strategy [“Bone Injection Gun” OR “EZ-IO” OR (“intraosseous access” and device)]. Articles published in last five years, available articles in English and Spanish, and with access to full text, were included. Results and conclusions: Convincing scientific evidence doesn’t exist to assert the BIG device superiority against EZ-IO, neither EZ-IO higher over BIG. The analyzed results reassert the intraosseous route like fast and secure alternative to access to vascular torrent in critically ill patients.
