Abstract

Research has identified the relevance of age as an important variable in the evolution of emotional intelligence. There is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and age, and gender seems to be implied. The objective of this study was to analyze the change of emotional intelligence based on age and gender. The sample consisted of 3 age groups: adolescents, from 17 to 20 years (N = 227), young adults, from 21 to 30 years (N = 227) and middle-aged people, from 31 to 60 years (N = 227). The TMMS-24 was used to measure emotional intelligence. The results indicated that emotional intelligence increase with age. There are differences in emotional intelligence between 3 age groups, young adults pay more attention to their emotions, and middle-aged people report greater Clarity and Repair. There is a gender effect on emotional intelligence, women score more than men in Attention. In relation to age and gender, it has been found that young women scored more Clarity and Repair than young men. The results can be explained by differential socialization, which the feminine aspects imply attention to the needs of others. In addition, older people have had more opportunities to practice emotional intelligence, and use emotional regulation strategies better.
