Résumé
Geological studies about historical quarries are usually based on classical studies about their rocks (mineralogy, petrology and geo-mechanical properties) with the objective of knowing the origin of the raw material of the monuments and/ or for their restoration. However, it is very common that these quarries have great historical value for the traditional uses of geodiversity, being they protected with some legal figures such as Property of Cultural Interest. In addition, these quarries are usually situated in places of geological interest and/or contain a rich geological heritage that usually remains unnoticed. Therefore, in this work it is recommended to consider the geoconservationist approach in the geological studies of historical quarries, analysing their geological heritage. Moreover, according to Law 42/2007, of December 13, on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, historical quarries must be included in the inventories of Traditional Knowledge of Geodiversity. Thus, 20 quarries of Roman origin in the Region of Murcia have been considered to be studied. Fourteen of them either have an important geological heritage or are situated within places of geological interest and are described in this article.
