Abstract

The reviews of cases of poisoning in pets and birds are useful for veterinary clinicians and toxicologists in order to investigate them. This paper reviews 39 cases of poisoning in animals investigated by Toxicological Service of the University of Murcia (Southeastern Spain) during 1994-1996. In this review we have been taken into account variables such as toxic compounds and its toxicological properties, availability of baits and species of animals poisoned. Dog was the species more poisoned (69%), followed by cat (18%), raptors (8%) and dove (5%). The prevalence of poisoning has been strychnine (12 cases), aldicarb (10 cases), anticoagulant rodenticides (6 cases), methyl-pirimiphos (4 cases), carbofenotion-fosmet (3 cases), carbaryl (2 cases) and zinc phosphide (2 cases). Baits in 26 of the 39 cases investigated were available for analysis. Aldicarb was the pesticide more frequently found in the baits (38%), followed by strychnine (23%). Results have been compared with other reviews in other countries.
