Resum

This paper reviews 60 accidental and deliberated poisoning cases in dogs and cats investigated by Toxicology Service of the University of Murcia during 1994-1996. We have taken into account several variables such as species poisoned, toxics, kind of poisoning, evolution of the cases, and the legal use of the results. Organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides and rodenticides were the compounds more commonly involved in poisoning in dogs and cats. Aldicarb (19%), strychnine (20%) and anticoagulant rodenticides (25%) were the specific toxics more frequently analysed. Dogs were the species most affected with a rate dogs:cats 4:1. Multiple poisonings were found in 12% of the cases investigated, being more frequent in cats. Deliberated poisonings (67%) were more common than accidental poisonings. Aldicarb, strychnine and organophosphorus insecticides were more frequent in deliberated poisonings, while anticoagulant rodenticides were more common in accidental poisonings. The errors in presumptive diagnosis were more frequent in cases of deliberated poisonings.
