Cytotoxic activities of the lead, cadmium and mercury on three renal cell lines (BGM, VERO and PK-15) have been assayed in this study. The metal acute exposure have been evaluated using two colorimetric methods: MTT-tetrazolio (MTT) and Neutral Red (NR). PK-15 cell line showed the concentration range more wide for lead and mercury, and BGM cell line for the cadmium. The cytotoxic concentration ranges were more closed whit NR than with MTT, except in VERO-cadmium and PK (15) mercury. Lead was the metal that showed the lowest toxicity level on cell lines and with both colorimetric methods. Mercury was the most toxic metal on BGM and VERO lines and cadmium it was on PK-15 cell line. We discuss the utility of comparison of cytotoxic effects of these metals using several parameters such as non observable effect level (NOEL), effective concentration 50 (EC50), effective concentration 100 (EC100) and curve doses-response.
