Abstract

According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work report, shoulder pain (SP) is one of the most common occupational health problems in Europe. It is particularly prevalent among street cleaning and waste collection workers. The project Prevention and physical readaptation at Work (PRE-REFILAB) is a novel intervention of prevention and physical readaptation in the labour field. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of SP of street cleaning and waste collection workers in an urban service company in the municipality of Murcia. A total of 18 workers aged between 38 and 62 years (52.5±7.1 years old) from an urban service company participated in this study. The workers were characterised by some temporary disability due to SP in the last 12 months. Body composition, sagittal disposition of the spine, range of motion (ROM) and isometric strength of the shoulder were evaluated in this study. According to the prognostic reference values established for the general healthy population, an individual descriptive analysis of the different variables evaluated was performed to identify the participants at high risk of SP. The statistical analysis of two paired samples showed asymmetry in the internal rotation ROM of the shoulder (p = 0.032). The urban service company workers (higher than 38% of total sample) showed worse values in most of the risk factors of shoulder pain evaluated (body composition, dorsal curvature, shoulder ROM -flexion, adduction and internal rotation- and internal rotation force) than the reference values of the general population.
