Resumen
Empirical evidence suggests that wage and occupational gender differences in the labor market are partly due to the fact that boys outperform girls in mathematics from the very young ages. The gender gap in mathematics might account for the lower presence of women in studies that are intensive in mathematics (STEM), associated to both higher wages and job stability. In this paper we review existing theories and provide empirical evidence using microdata from primary and secondary schools in the region of Madrid. Finally, we derive some implications to be met by policies aimed at efficiently closing gender gaps in the labor market.
