Abstract

Objectives To identify the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation in patients with chronic low back pain. Material and methods Systematic review of the scientific literature published in the PubMed, Cochrane Library and PEDro databases. The recommendations Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) were followed. The methodological quality of the included studies ranged between 4/10 and 9/10. Results Once the initial identification process was carried out, 6 studies were selected to be included in this systematic review. Significant improvements were observed in lumbar sagittal mobility on flexion, in static and dynamic resistance of the trunk on flexion and extension, in functional disability, as well as a decrease in pain, and increased activity of the lumbar stabilizing musculature, of static balance and quality of life in the groups in which proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation was applied compared to the control groups. Conclusions Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation seems to improve the deficiencies and limited activities generated by chronic low back pain. It would be advisable to carry out a larger number of randomized clinical trials that allow more clear evidence of the improvements observed in existing studies.
