Abstract
This paper describes the reproductive strategies of two endemic Iberian cyprinid species, Barbus graellsii and Chondrostoma miegii, in the Cinca River (Ebro River basin, NE Spain). B. graellsii females showed a long period of gonad quiescency from July to January, gonad activity beginning in February and extending to June with two modes of ripening oocytes just prior to spawning period (batch spawner). In Ch. miegii specimens, the females only developed one mode of yolky oocytes, which were spawned in May by 40% of the females and in June by the other 60%. There was no significant correlation between fork length and oocyte diameter in Ch. miegii, suggesting a selection of optimum oocyte size in this population. Barbus graellsii and Chondrostoma miegii develop life-history patterns that, though they differ between them, fall within the general characteristics of Iberian cyprinids adapted to fluctuating environments.
