Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the relationship of self perception of motor competence with the level of regular physical and sport activity in school children from the region of Murcia. In order to achieve this, a scale called IAFHE (Inventory of regular physical activity in school children) was used and it was applied to a definite sample of 1120 school children with ages between 10 and 12. Self perception of motor competence has shown been a variable that relates positively with global levels of regular physical activity. However, this association can be appreciated with more intensity in the subscale which defines activity during leisure time. This circumstance is caused, probably, as the subjects that have higher levels of motor coordination and feel competent in the practice of sport, and feel competent in the practice of sport, are keener to reproduce their models of physical and sport practice more repeatedly. These findings highlight the need to direct the promotion of physical and sport practice towards models of development of motor competence, which will allow the self participation of subjects in sport activities outside the school environment.
