Resumen

Since the review made by Mas (1986), knowledge about the distribution and population characteristics of freshwater fish from the Segura river basin has greatly improved. This paper presents the observed historical changes on species composition and the updated distribution of species in the sectors established in the mentioned review. The traits of the present fish communities reflect a marked degradation compared to the historical status. The number of species has significantly increased due to foreign species introduction. Turnover rate in species composition has been extremely high in less than 25 years, reaching a maximum in river sectors that have suffered greater impacts from pollution and habitat alteration.
