Most food poisoning is caused by ingestion of bacteria or viruses that contaminate food or beverages, water included, in relation to handling, improper storage or preparation of food and drinks. Salmonella gastroenteritis remains a relatively common problem in our region with seasonal outbreaks. Most people with Salmonella infection present with fever, diarrhea and cramping that resolves without specific treatment. Nevertheless children, elderly and immunocompromised patients may develop serious complications. In contrast, typhoid fever is a rare condition in our country, being almost all imported cases. As for Yersinia spp. infections, there are no documented cases of plague in our area but Yersinia enterocolitica is a relatively common cause of enteroinvasive diarrhea.
