Abstract

In this study, our aim is to analyse the relationship between two independent disciplines, the cinema and the psychiatry, as well as the influence that historical and social events have on the evolution of this specialty of medicine and of a media accessible to the general public like the cinema. We want to stress that, although many studies have been conducted on the evolution of psychiatric ideas and the attention paid to mental patients as well as the development of Spanish cinematography during the mentioned period (1975-1982), the innovation of this research is the study of the interaction between these two disciplines. We will study how the sociopolitical context influences the idea of psychiatry and mental health reflected by the cinema, researching into the way the cinema, a cultural instrument to which most of the population can have access to, has shown the figure of the psychiatrist and other professionals in mental health, of mental patients and other factors related to the field of mental disease.
