Abstract

This study proves the effectiveness of a program of physical exercise adapted to elderly people, and directed to delay the deterioration and improve the state of health. We recruited 19 subjects from two charity residences for geriatrics. According to residence origin, nine subjects (five women and four men) were assigned to the experimental group and 10 (six women and four men) to the control group. The average age of the subjects in the control group was 80.36 and 77.18 in the experimental group. The subjects and directors of both centers manifested their consent before participating in the program. During three months the experimental group carried out 45 minutes of physical exercise three times a week, and every two weeks participated in 20 minutes of sanitary education activities. The control group did not receive treatment. Benefits were seen in the subjects that participated in the preventive program. In balance and flexibility, the experimental group improved in control aspects, and in coordination the experimental group showed smaller deterioration. The observed improvement supposes a positive result, the improvement and the delay of the deterioration have favorable effects in the prognosis
