Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of different techniques and durations of a stretching exercise program to improve the hip flexion range of motion in young adults. A total of 139 volunteer subjects (weight: 70.18 ± 10.40 kg; height 172.68 ± 7.00 cm; age 21.3 ± 2.4 years) were randomly distributed into 5 groups: a control group and 4 experimental groups. For the experimental groups, Group 1 performed 15 seconds of passive stretching, Group 2 performed 30 seconds of passive stretching, Group 3 performed 15 seconds of active stretching, and Group 4 performed 30 seconds of active stretching. All experimental groups performed a total of 180 seconds of training session duration, with 3 sessions per week during 12 weeks. Hip flexion range of motion was measured using the straight-leg raise test. No significant differences were found in ROM between pre and post measurement for the control group. However, significant improvements in ROM were found between pre and post measurement for all experimental groups, although no significant differences were found between stretching duration and techniques for experimental groups. We recommended the prescription of active stretching programs, because they are effective and safe for the locomotive apparatus. The choice of the stretch's duration depends on the stretch tolerance of each subject.
