Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the hamstring criterion-related validity of the unilateral sit-and-reach test. A hundred and twenty males (mean age: 22.79 ± 3.12 years) and 100 females (mean age: 23.12 ± 4.56 years) were asked to perform two trials of unilateral sit-and-reach (left and right leg), back-saver sit-and-reach (left and right leg), sit-and-reach and straight leg raise (left and right leg) tests in a randomized order. The score was measured with a sit-and-reach box when subjects reached forward as far as possible without bending the knees. The score in the unilateral sit-and-reach test was higher than the sit-and-reach (p<0.001) and back-saver sit-and-reach (p<0.001) tests. Correlation values between the unilateral sitand- reach test and straight leg raise were low to moderate in males (0.54 and 0.58 for the left and right leg, respectively) and moderate in females (0.73 and 0.75 for the left and right leg, respectively). In conclusion, the unilateral sit-and-reach test shows a moderate validity as measure of hamstring muscle extensibility. The unilateral sit-and-reach test is a better test than the back-saver sit-and-reach test because his correlation values with respect to straight leg raise are higher.
