Abstract
In this study the Type I error rate and the statistieal power of three ehi-square tests for deteeting and evaluating of differential item functioning (DIF) are eompared: (a) Seheunemann ehi-square test, (b) Total ehi-square test, and (e) Mantel-Haenszel test. The results show that the three proeedures have the same type 1 error rate aeross all eonditions examined. The tests are eonservatives. In relation to the statistieal power, when sample size was small and differenees in diffieulty index were minimal, Mantel-Haenszel proeedure was the powest. Results indieated that there was close agreement among three DIF detection proeedures when the magnitude of differenees and the sample size were ineremented. In these eonditions the statistieal power was high
