Abstract

In 1994 the economy of Murcia returned to a positive path of growth, signalling a new cycle. Two developments in particular characterized the year's results: the creation of jobs and the strong impulse from the external sector. Exports, togther with the manufacturing sector, were the driving forces in the region's growth. By contrast, private consumption remained practically unchanged. Many of the problems that afflicted Murcia's economy at the beginning of the previous upturn still persist. These problems, relatedto the region's productive structure and the competitiveness of its firms, are compounded by the scarcity of water and the uncertainty about water resources in the future.
