Abstract

Recent works on the anatomic location of Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma) otherthan those classically associated to contagious agalactia (CA) have allowedincreasing knowledge of the epidemiological role of caprine and ovine malesconcerning this disease. In this sense, the aim of the present work was todemonstrate the presence of Ma in semen of rams, which has already beendescribed in experimental conditions. Therefore, 384 ejaculates from 167rams were analysed and Ma was detected in 56 of these samples, whichbelonged to 44 different rams. Moreover, it was also demonstrated that theseminal excretion of this agent was intermittent. Hence, these results confirmthe presence of Ma in semen of asymptomatic rams, which implies a risk withregard to the diffusion and maintenance of CA, especially in endemic areas.Likewise, these outcomes highlight the need to establish effective controlmeasures to prevent the admission of these carrier rams to artificialinsemination centres
