Abstract

Given that it has been confirmed the excretion of Mycoplasma agalactiae(Ma), the main etiological agent of contagious agalactia (CA), through thesemen of asymptomatic carrier bucks, we proceeded to verify its abilityto colonize the vagina, in order to evaluate a possible risk of venerealtransmission. For this purpose, vaginal swabs were taken from 88 goatsin 8 centres of semen extraction and 2 chronically infected herds. In oneof this herds also foreskin swabs were taken from the bucks (n=20). Inall the samples it was performed a molecular diagnosis by specific PCRof Ma. Three vaginal samples from a teaser goat and two goats from oneof the chronically infected herds were positive to the presence of Ma. Inthis herd it was also confirmed the presence of Ma in the foreskin of twobucks. This results state the necessity of including the vaginal sampleof teaser goats in surveillance programs of semen extraction centres.Besides, it has been demonstrated the important role that asymptomaticbucks may play in herds, as a reservoir and source of diffusion of CA.
